Rafael Lacruz-Rengel is one of the founding Professors of the School of Industrial Design, Universidad de Los Andes (ULA), Venezuela. He holds a Bachelor (Hons) of Architecture (ULA), a Postgraduate Diploma in History of Design and Material Culture (University of Brighton, UK), a Master of Arts in Industrial Design (University of Central England, UK), and a PhD in Product Design (Birmingham City University, UK) whose thesis was focused on the generation of a theoretical model for the semantics of product ideation. Rafael has been teaching design theory to industrial design  undergraduate students since 1998, when he became a faculty member of  Universidad de Los Andes. Throughout his academic career at ULA Rafael has been appointed Head of the Department of Theory and Methodology for Design (1999-2001), and Head of the School of Industrial Design (2005-2008). He is also a founding member and present Head of GISODIV (Group of Socio-cultural Studies of Design in Venezuela) at Universidad de Los Andes (see: http://www.arq.ula.ve/gisodiv/e_index.html ). His main research interests are design theory (including psychological issues), the semiotics of objects/products, design aesthetics, and the socio-cultural factors behind the act of designing.

Rafael Lacruz Rengel es uno de los profesores fundadores de la Escuela de Diseño Industrial de la Universidad de Los Andes (ULA), Venezuela. Es un Arquitecto egresado de la Universidad de Los Andes, con Especialización en Historia del Diseño y Cultura Material por la University of Brighton (Inglaterra), Master of Arts en Diseño Industrial por la University of Central England (Inglaterra), Doctorado en Diseño de Productos por la Birmingham City University (Inglaterra). Rafael ha enseñado teoría del diseño a estudiantes de la Licenciatura de Diseño Industrial desde 1998, año en el cual se convierte en docente de la Universidad de Los Andes. Durante su carrera académica en la ULA Rafael ha sido Jefe del Departamento de Teoría y Metodología para el Diseño (1999-2001) y Director de la Escuela de Diseño Industrial (2005-2008) de la Facultad de Arquitectura y Diseño (ULA). El es también uno de los miembros fundadores y actual coordinador del GISODIV (Grupo de Investigaciones Socioculturales del Diseño en Venezuela) de la ULA (véase www.arq.ula.ve/gisodiv/ ). Entre sus intereses de investigación están: la teoría del diseño (incluyendo sus aspectos psicológicos), la semiótica de los objetos / productos, la estética del diseño, y los factores socioculturales del diseño.
